What a crazy week. I am just recharging from the past weekend in Vancouver with the Watchmen at the Commodore Ballroom. I love the stage here. In fact I spend a fair amount of time in the afternoon just walking around remembering all the times I crossed the mountains to end up right here. This place has to be one of my all-time favourite rooms in the country. Earlier in the week Bad Intent played our hometown show at the Aron Theatre here in Campbellford. Thanks to Todd Minicola for bringing up a spectacular PA and Lighting show. It was a great night and marked the start of a period of come down from the business of the last three months.

Last weekend at the Drake we had the crew from Arbor Live come by to shoot some footage for next season. Great bunch of folks, mostly from Manitoba, out woking on this show with host Stevie Salas. They got some great footage and we had an awesome time as usual. Monday morning I drove in to Toronto for a rather intense interview with host Stevie. Great guy. Here are some pics from that night.

As well, tomorrow is the big once a year hometown show here in Campbellford. We are all pretty stoked about this…more fun to come.

Well folks

It all kinda came together really fast. Plans for a new record this coming winter gave way to ideas of having a sampler to let you all hear the new sound (pedal steel has a hold on me). These ideas melded in with a few upcoming shows and the thought of giving away free cds.

And now here we are. In less than a month we decided to record and release some music. No big hoopla, no massive planning, no major budget, just a new sound and something for all of you who have been so supportive in all my endeavours. As well a huge thanks to John Whynot for making room in his schedule to come up and record this with us.

Baby steps… new recording on way

Well it seems like forever since I have sat down to write one of these posts. Up until last winter I was doing great with the daily news as I see it. I guess for me it comes in waves. Between writing cycles, recording, touring, family and just living the life of an artist the whole idea of constant public expressions seems to come and go.

I just got back form three days in the studio down in Toronto with Bad Intent. I decided to bring up John Whynot and go back into the Woodshed for a few days to see if the trio I have been working on (and the concept of pedal steel as the only guitar) could actually fly on a recording.

Happy to announce that it worked, almost better than I had expected. For three days we worked incredibly hard at capturing the vibe the Bad Intent have been cultivating. As well John was highly entertaining between takes…

Four songs; Don’t Be Suprised, Other Side Of Wrong, For You and King Is Gone

It was not pre-determined which songs we were shooting for directly. Day one was a chance to get sounds together so we just ran songs and these four were the tracks that John gravitated towards.

The artwork is finished as of today and printing has begun in order to have copies of the new four song EP for next weeks show at the Drake. John is mixing this weekend and masters arrive on Sunday. The schedule is crazy and tight but there is a great energy to working this way.

Outside of great times in the studio, we also had some time in Toronto to visit some great restaurants (Omonia and the Lakeview Lunch) and as well get a few hours sown at Danny’s place (Motel).

Thanks to those who let us crash on their couches and loaned us gear. BTW the amp that got used for the entire session was the Traynor Darkhorse with the accompanying 1×12 cabinet.

I am currently doing some recording with Bad Intent under the guidance of trusted producer John Whynot. Once again the sound is morphing and I am highly excited to capture something unique and interesting as always. Using pedal steel guitar and blending the country/folk sounds with old school rock I feel that something new and special is on the horizon.

That said, I would like to invite you to a few upcoming shows that will celebrate this new sound and recording. All concert attendees will receive a free copy of the new EP, “The Goodness Of Bad Intent.” Hope to see you out and around.

We had an awesome time last night playing with Thornley and Sloan. Great crowd made for a fun, although drunken, time. Thanks for singing along with all your fave tunes. I am sitting poolside at the Jasper aquatic center while my kids enjoy the waterside. My mind is filled with this coming evening and a possible set list for my time onstage at Whistlers Inn. Things have certainly changed since I started coming here back in 1991 with the Watchmen. We always played to a packed house of drunk kids at the AthaB. These days it is an older crowd and the tunes are a lot quieter. That being said, twenty years have passed by. I now have a wife and two kids. A family that travels with me on tour two months of the year. I am making music and recording my own records. I still play as much as I want. Things have changed, but they have also stayed the same. I’m still living the dream. The soundtrack and characters have changed, but mostly it’s all the same.
